Coastal California Cruising

The coastal highways in California are always in a state of change.  Gravity, plus ocean often trumps road.

Here, you can see where the centreline of the road used to be.

It must have been a bad one of these that caused the continuing road closure north of Big Sur that necessitated my change of route.

Any bets as to what species of wildlife I could see on the top of this offshore rock?CIMG5057

Believe it or not, Canada Geese.  There was just a little bit of greenery at the top, but I could not see if this pair were nesting or not.  But on many nearby slightly less radical rock islands offshore, I could see that geese were clearly on nests!  I doubt the survival rate of their young is very high however.  They are certainly safe from coyotes and other land based predators, but leaving the nest would mean a couple hundred feet crashing down a near vertical cliff, only to end up in pounding surf.CIMG5062CIMG5063CIMG5056CIMG5064CIMG5065CIMG5048

That’s my story; and I’m sticking to it.  Till next time.

  1. You out did yourself !

I was awe struck looking at the road and the ocean down below.......and your truck and rig up high looking like a helpless pawn of nature.

  3. That highway with the centerline to nowhere is a good testament to the erosive power of Mother Natue. That photo of your rig high atop that cliff face is a good testament to the belief a Sunami wave has never been recorded that high...
