I’m not sure I have ever been to a Nevada state park before? But I headed out of Vegas and I wanted to check this area out, as well as the boondocking possibilities around Overton, which is in the same area. I thought I had driven through this area years ago, but nothing so far has looked familiar. I had planned to go north from Henderson, but that plan ran into difficulties shall we say.
So, it was northbound on I-15 pass Nellis Air Force Base before heading east into Valley of Fire State Park.
They have a $10 day use fee just to drive through, but it was the only road going that way, and as it turns out, the scenery is worth the price.
I also found some very nice campgrounds, for an additional $10 a night, or $20 more if you want an electrical site.
As a bonus, they have a great RV dump site at the entrance to the campground, which came in handy.
As you may know, I’m normally not a ‘campground’ type of guy, but this place is pretty spectacular and has some good hiking, so I think it is worth it. So I set up camp and set out at least one of my satellite dishes!
I was thinking this morning how this would have been a great place to sell film – when cameras still used it!
But at the same time, the card in my camera inexplicably failed, and I could not take any photos. A bit ironic, I thought. Luckily, I had off-loaded all the photos to the laptop the night before, so no photos got lost in the crisis.
But here I was in photographers heaven, with no camera. Well, except for my iPhone! So, that called for an emergency trip into Overton, where Radio Shack was glad to sell me an overpriced 2GB card. But no complaints, I am back in the photo business, just in time for the sun to come out in the afternoon, which it did.
And I took way too many photos to post here, so they will have to wait till tomorrow!
Stewart Point is not far from where you are now. There is free dry camping right by Lake Mead. We used to go there every year and enjoyed it a lot. I don't know if they have a host there now.
ReplyDeleteValley of Fire SP is on our list of places to see so hopefully we can make it there maybe next fall.
ReplyDeleteYou probably noticed the boondocking spot on the bluff above Overton, sort of barren but the price is right and a good view.
ReplyDeleteThats where I launched my 09/10 season with a one week plus, stay last November.
You can stay on that road all the way to Henderson but if you return that way you have to pay an entry fee.
I made so many Vegas trips last year that I took all 3 routes. No one seems any fast than the other.
